Drinking Water Unit

Drinking Water Unit
Fresh, safe and wholesome piped drinking water is supplied to households and commercial buildings in Singapore.
The PUB, which is the national water agency, is the major supplier of piped drinking water in Singapore. The PUB is responsible for managing the supply of its drinking water and its distribution network installed on the main island and those installed on the offshore islands.

The NEA’s Drinking Water Unit (DWU) is responsible for regulating the quality of piped drinking water supplied by water suppliers from their treatment plants and through water mains in Singapore. Using a dedicated team of officers, the DWU administers the Environmental Public Health (Quality of Piped Drinking Water) Regulations, which came into effect on 1 August 2008.
The Regulations include requirements for the suppliers to conduct sampling and testing of piped drinking water that they supply, and to carry out water safety plans to minimize the likelihood of any piped drinking water failing to comply with the water quality standards prescribed under the Regulations. The DWU conducts audits and site checks to ensure that the water suppliers comply with the relevant regulatory requirements. The piped drinking water standards set out under the Regulations are based on international guidelines such as those issued by the World Health Organisation, and have been developed by a Technical Committee comprising local and overseas experts from varied fields such as toxicology, water treatment, microbiology, medicine, corrosion, and physical, analytical, legal and social sciences.
